Update method without reboot

Each time I update SmartFTP, I am given a choice of restarting explorer.exe or do a reboot. I have been doing a reboot because restarting explorer causes three icons in the systray to disappear (not restart the icon). I am on Win 7 32-bit SP1 and the sole user as admin.

Is there an option or options that I can turn off that would not require me to reboot upon update?

No. The problem is with the applications you have installed that do not restore the icons in the systray.
