unpacking tar files

Anybody know how to "unpack" a tar file? Do I do that locally? Once uploaded? How

I've found some command lines to unpack but don't know where to enter them...

Can anybody help the technologically challenged?

You have to login to the shell (ssh) to your server and unpack the tar manually.
