after having installed smartftp for some people who are rather new to the idea of ftp ("can you really do this?") i realised one shortcoming of smartftp: the default view, hiding the local browser, is not really that beginner friendly.
i guess most users of smartftp used another client before they stumbled over this one. so the basic principle was clear. for the unknowing it would be much easier if they find their local files on the left side, the remote on the right side (or top-bottom).
