OS X web server - can't view files

SmartFTP usually works perfectly for me, but I've recently had to connect to a Mac OS X web server. Connection is normal but when I'm logged in no files are visible. It's possible to upload files and download if you know the exact filename but obviously this is less than ideal.

(I have tried using the FTP application, Fetch on a Mac and files appear as expected.)

Any ideas?
