Suggest you do an on-line install - it sounds like you may have a naff/corrupt dll somewhere and that may just fix it.

Not sure which OS you're using, but also you could consider re-loading the latest patch pack (SP6a for Win NT, SP4 for Win2k (and I think there's now an SP1 for XP?)).
