Software firewall connection issues

Hi,

I've just downloaded SmartFTP, yesterday, but haven't been able to get it work yet. Can anyone help?

When trying to connect to my new web site, using SmartFTP, I get the following error (repeated several times):

-----------------------------
Continue to login attempt 3...
Connecting to (ftp.m3mdy.org.uk) -> IP: 195.50.105.51 PORT: 21

No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

Cannot login waiting to retry (30s)...
------------------------------

I'm sure the problem is something to do with my home PC configuration, as I have been able to transfer files to the website via the ftp facilities in MSIE from my work PC (but can't do that very often!), but have been unable to connect via MSIE, or WS-FTP, getting similar errors, and nor can I connect to any of the ftp sites preconfigured in SmartFTP, getting the same error as above.

I am running Windows XP Home edition, Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2.03422-1633 : Service Pack 1) If that helps

I am connecting via a telewest blueyonder cable modem.

The built-in XP firewall is off, and I am running Kerio (formerly Tiny), but get the same problem with the firewall turned off.

Can anyone suggest what may be the cause of this, as I know ftp has worked properly in the past - although it is some months since I last tried it.

Thanks in anticipation,

Martyn

Try uninstalling the firewall completely, then rebooting.
Then try connecting via SmartFTP/MSIE another try.

Disabling a software firewall is sometimes not enough.
There are services that run for them.

Good luck :!:

Thanks for that Luis,

I did as you suggested, and FTP is now firing on all cylinders!

Thanks very much for your assistance.

Regards,

Martyn

Hello,

I am having the same problem, but do not want to completely uninstall my firewall!!!.

Do I have to do this each time I use FTP in order for it to work?

Thanks for your assistance.

I would make sure you have SmartFTP set as a trusted application, as well with full rights in the config.

A properly configured firewall will work perfectly with SmartFTP. Many fellow SmartFTP'ers are doing it.

If you can connect to an FTP server with other clients, then it's clear the permission(s) are not set right.

SmartFTP is working fine. This has to be a problem with McAfee Personal Firewall.

I cannot connect to any ftp server using SmartFTP, Dreamweaver, or MSIE.

My next step is to uninstall the firewall, but that leaves me exposed. If I uninstall, re-configure my ftp accounts, and then re-install the firewall should that work?

Thanks for the help!

Try ussing Tiny Personal Firewall 5.00.1218

This is definately a problem with McAfee Personal Firewall Plus. I uninstalled and can now connect to ftp with no problems. Seems ridiculous since I like this firewall, but have to use ftp.

I'm going to try ZoneAlarm and see how that works.

aokromes recommends Tiny Firewall. I second that!

It is however now marketed as Kerio firewall, (version 2, I think)and works well with SmartFTP. I did have to unload it (or at least I did, and it resolved my problem), but was able to save and reinstall the firewall configuration, and it is now working well with SmartFTP. It is also free for personal use.

Good luck!
