Novell Bordermanager as proxy server

Hello smartftp users,

Is there someone who has experience with using Novell's Bordermanager as proxyserver, with logon, with smartftp?

I don't get the proxy settings right.

Getting SmartFTP to work in a Novell Bordermanager secured network is a bit tricky
an not very comfortable if you switch between different FTP-Hosts.

Anyway .....

Requirements: Your Novell User-Account is allowed to do FTP-Transfer
The separator has to be set from $ to @ by the Novell-Admin

To use FTP you have to authenticate at the Novell-gateway first.
Therefore your your FTP Client has to send it's request in the following way:

USER firewallID@usernameFTPHost@Host
firewallPass@FTPHostPass

SmartFTP is only able to send it the other way round:

USER usernameFTPHost@firewallID@Host
FTPHostPass@firewallPass

So you have to enter your FTP information the following way:

First use "Options/Settings"
In the tree you choose Connections/Proxy
There you choose "USER user@fireID@Host"

Host in proxy is the name or IP of your boardermanager Proxy
Set the logon checkbox an enter the FTPAccount and FTPPassword !!(yes that's right)
Close the settings with "OK"

Under "File" choose "New Remote Browser"
Under "Host" fill in the IP or name of the FTP Server
Username hast o be your Novell-accountname with full context e.g. tony.sales.automotive.truckstop
Password is your Novell-Login-Passwd

Now connect an enjoy !

P.S.: if you want o connect to another FTP-Server you certainly not only have to change the FTP-Address
but also the Login-information which ist stored under "Proxy"

RanX: Thank you for answering the user's question.

What FTP client supports the proxy setting required by Novell's Bordermanager?

Regards,
-Mat

Hi Mat,

sorry for the delayed answer:

At the moment I know only one client (as I'm not very familiar with FTP-Clients)
which does the job.
PSFtp - which has formely been available in a free an a commercial version
but has now become commercial-only

If I find another one I'll let you know.

Regards
