I just installed SmartFTP (windows 2000) and when I connect to an ftp site I don't see any of the contents of the directories. I changed to a directory which I know exists and then that directory shows up but no other contents.

You directed turning off -a and -L. I have tried this in the Tools/settings/properties, but they still appear in the log.
I have been unable to see any directory or files.
I called the ISP for help; they were able to see the files.
I uploaded a file, which I could then see at the time, and the ISP was also able to see it. Yet when I log back in, even that one is invisible.
I tried the command line to change directories or list files, with no success.
It tells me that the files and directories don't exist.
I tried changing different settings, unchecking all of them, then checking one at a time. System seems to ignore my changes.
