CHMOD Errors

When i try to CHMOD a file, it says

SITE CHMOD 444 cplogfile.log
500 Unknown command.

does anyone know what this means and what i can do about it? i used to be able to CHMOD, but it won't let me anymore!! thank you

site chmod is not a required command for ftp servers. its an extension.
seems the server doesnt implement this extension.

It will not be possible, due to the host ftp server not supporting the "SITE CHMOD" command.
