Always uses 2 connections

I have found that whenever I start an ftp session in SmartFTP, it always seems to make 2 connections to the ftp server.

i.e. when I type "netstat -an" in a command prompt, 2 connections are shown to the destination IP on port 21.

Is this normal and will it affect any simultaneous connection limits on the remote server? Thanks.
