Have you thought about adding x509 authentication and GridFTP support?
GridFTP is a growing highspeed data protocol which supports multiple streams and some very very cool features.

The larger Grid projects and the smaller ones too are starting to use this as their primary data transport protocol. A GUI tool - like smartFTP would be awesome!
