Compatibility

Is SmartFTP compatible with Windows XP?

I recently downloaded SmartFTP to a new computer (which has WinXP). When I go to login, it connects to the server, but won't login.

I have checked and rechecked my login sequence, and it still won't work.

I have tried logging into SmartFTP from another computer (which has Win98) and the login sequence works just fine.

When I login in to SmartFTP on the internet, it works just fine.

Does anyone have any suggests as to why it won't work on my computer? I have tried downloading SmartFTP again, to see if that would take care of the problem, but it didn't.

ANY suggestions that you could offer would be GREATLY appreciated!

Yes, SmartFTP is supposed to be compatible with Windows XP (see system requirements).

Post your system information and the ftp log so that it can be more easily diagnosed. (for system information: in SmartFTP, go to Help > About > System Info > Copy to Clipboard and then paste here).

This is the error message that I receive...

Socket connected waiting for login sequence.
Connection timeout. No response from server.

Hmm...that's odd. I've used SmartFTP on WinXP Home with few problems.
On a side note, from my experience with Windows XP, you should have at least 256 MB RAM (you have 128MB and very few free memory resources).

Have you tried connecting to a completely different server, just to make sure that it's not simply a problem with the other end?

Try...

-Reinstalling SmartFTP
-Running SmartFTP in compatibility mode

Note: do NOT install SmartFTP in compatibility mode (there's a difference between installing in compatibility mode and running in compatibility mode).

From a reply that you gave on another question/post (entitled -- Dumb question: exiting passive mode), I was able to fix my problem. Thanks!
